The tradition of Banarasi sari-making is said to have been introduced to Varanasi by the Mughal emperors, who brought skilled weavers to the city from Persia. The weavers of Varanasi are known for their skill and attention to detail, and the process of hand-weaving a Banarasi sari is a complex and time-consuming one that requires years of training and practice.

The origin of Chikankari is initiated by the influence of intricate carving patterns of Mughal architecture during their period. The Chikan work in Lucknow is older than 200 years and later it is patronized by Nawabs. There are 5000 families involved in Chikankari embroidery in and around villages of Lucknow.

Block Printing also known as woodblock printing is a craft that uses hand-carved wooden ‘blocks’ to transfer print to fabric, paper or any other medium. Block Printing has long history of originating from China in 3rd century and then to Egypt in 4th century travelling long way and keeping it popularity alive it has now important centres of the craft in Jaipur, Bangru, Sanganer, Pali and Barmer. Having local variation between centres of practice, Doo Rokhi printing where the fabric is printed on both sides is practiced here.

The Kashmir shawl, also known as Cashmere, is known for its distinctive Kashmiri weave, and is made from shahtoosh or pashmina wool. Kashmiri shawls are lightweight and warm, and have beautiful designs. The use of buta (also called boteh) motif, an almond or pine cone-shaped motif with a sharp-curved upper end, is characteristic to these shawls.
